The Most Simple Green Bean Recipe For Thanksgiving….. I am going to drop this right here, I love a good vegetable! I love green beans either way that you want to give them to me fresh green beans in the produce section. Or maybe you want to choose frozen green beans in the frozen food section. Lastly, maybe you like canned green beans because you may be short on time, or that is what you grew up eating! No one is here judging what kind of green beans that you like for Thanksgiving Day!
I am sharing my green bean recipe here on the blog today, and I am using fresh green beans for the win. Using fresh green beans is my preference, but I have had them all.
I am approaching this by saying that is okay to not use any smoked meat or meat at all in this recipe. We are using bacon because I do eat meat, and I prefer the flavor going through my green beans. I do think that the smoked meat brings out so much more flavor. We grew up putting smoked meat into my green beans, and that’s what we like. Adding in the smoked meat puts so much more depth and flavor into the dish.
There is still so much love in this dish without smoked meat. Green beans can be just who they are, and they don’t need a lot to get them down. I do think your guest who do eat meat, will enjoy the flavor 100 times more if it is added to enhance the dish.
This is an old Southern way of cooking green beans, and this could literally be a meal all in itself. This provides a really hearty way for others to take in if they only like veggies. I find that we have never really gone without this. My grandmother did this so much when I was a little one, and this was a regular way of eating my green beans. I think this will liven up your Thanksgiving table some!!
Honestly for me though I prefer the green beans with potatoes that sometimes make a whole meal for me.
What I love to do with green beans is to begin the process of searing, or browning the meat I am using on the stove first. You can honeslty use any type of smoked meat you love, but hamhocks. These take way too long to get tender, and they take up a lot of time to cook down to be tender. I use bacon, smoked sausage for my green beans. I also may try a smoked turkey wing for the friends who don’t like pork products for religious reasons too.
We love to sear them in a little bit of olive oil with yellow onions, and bacon. This gets the green beans ready for the flavor. Once the onions and bacon, or meat of your choice start browning go ahead and throw in the potatoes. This is a good time as any to start using your favorite seasoning. Check out the recipe below..
